This is the first in a series of team profiles, introducing you to (hopefully) everyone involved in this years excavations.
My name is David Standing and I am currently a student at University of South Wales studying for a MA in Regional History. For my dissertation I am undertaking a landscape study of Llantarnam Abbey, its water systems and associated features. I am also a weekly volunteer at Torfaen Museum trust where I help out in an assistant curatorial role.
Although my first love is the historical landscape and non-invasive investigation in general, my archaeological experiences are quite diverse. Under the guidance of Cadw I have excavated on the prehistoric burial chambers at Tinkinswood and St Lythans . I was also heavily involved in The Lost City excavations in Caerleon during 2011, where all things were obviously Roman. Last year I had the pleasure of excavating on the Iron Age Caerleon excavation run by our own university. I have also taken part in community excavations and led many field walking exercises.
My own study means that I am undergoing an investigation of a semi-invasive nature where remains are cleaned up for recording purposes. You can read about my exploits on The day of Archaeology website.

Hopefully, one day funding will be found to undertake a more invasive approach.
